LAUGAVEGUR - HIKING TRAIL
LANDMANNALAUGAR - THORSMORK
The total hiking
distance is close to 53 km and the route from Thorsmork to Skogar on the
south coast adds 24-26 km.
The
Landmannalaugar - Thorsmork route is called „Laugavegurinn", The Hot
Spring Route, which is very appropriate. It is clearly marked between
the huts on Hrafntinnusker
(Obsidian Skerry), on lake Alftavatn (The Lake of the Whooper Swans) and
on river Sydri-Emstrua in Fremri-Botnar.
Whooper swans were hunted there in the past. In
1838 a farmer drowned in the lake, when he was hunting the swans by
chasing them on a swimming horse. There are two tourist huts near the
lake, one of which is solely meant for hikers. The surroundings are well
worth a closer inspection and a stopover in the huts.
The first leg
to the hut in Hrafntinnusker is 10-12 km long with an ascent of 470 m
and a descent of 50 m (4-6 hours).
The second leg
to the hut on lake Alftavatn is 10-12 km long with a descent of 490 m
(4-5 hours).
The third leg
to the hut in Fremri-Botnar covers 16 km with a 40 m descent (5-6
hours).
The fourth and
last leg to the hut in Basar in Thorsmork is 15-16 km long with a
300 m descent and a 100 m ascent in an undulating landscape (5-6 hours).
Those who decide
to continue on the well-marked route over the
Fimmvorduhals
Pass to Skogar can divide the leg by
staying overnight in the hut in the pass after a 5 hour walk and
continue for five hours the next day down to Skogar.
All kind of
weather is experienced when crossing over to the south coast and
sometimes the markers are hidden by the snow patches. In 1970 a few
hikers died of hypothermia up there. There are several books and
booklets available on these hiking routes.
The Travel Guide is
a great aid if the routes are traced there.
